What is a street dance battle?

A street dance battle is a dance duel: two dancers face off by rounds, answering the music and the rival with their bodies. Hip hop, popping, locking, house, breaking… and a crowd that decides who takes it, live.

What a dance battle is

A dance battle is a 1v1 (or crew vs crew) where each dancer steps up to impose their style over music they don't know in advance: they have to listen, interpret and answer on the spot.

It was born in the streets and clubs of hip hop and now fills events like Juste Debout or Red Bull Dance Your Style. The essence doesn't change: musicality, attitude and the face-off.

Styles and how a battle works

Many styles coexist: hip hop, popping, locking, house, waacking, krump and breaking (b-boys and b-girls). They battle in short alternating rounds, answering the rival and the beat.

Judges reward musicality (dancing what you hear), technique, originality and the direct answer. You can't bring a set routine: the point is improvising over whatever the DJ plays.

Who decides who wins

There are two schools: a panel of expert judges, and the format where the crowd decides. Red Bull Dance Your Style popularized the latter: you win by making the crowd scream loudest.

Roundr brings that format to anyone. The crowd votes live from their phones on who won each round and the score shows on screen: the audience decides, no closed jury.

Street dance vs. freestyle, beatbox and aura

In freestyle the word speaks; in beatbox, sound; in aura farming, presence. In street dance the body speaks: interpreting the music in real time is the art.

It shares the mechanic with the others —head-to-head, by rounds, crowd deciding— but rewards movement: musicality, flow and character.

How to run your own street dance battle

You don't need a big event or a jury. With Roundr you build the bracket, drop a QR and the crowd votes from their phones, live. 1v1, by style or all styles: you decide.

Every dancer claims their @tag and racks up points, wins and aura on the scene's ranking. Set the battle; the crowd decides.
