What is a game of SKATE?
A game of SKATE is skateboarding's 1v1 duel: one skater lands a trick, the other has to match it. Miss, and you take a letter —S, K, A, T, E— and whoever spells the word loses. It's chess on wheels: technique, nerve and cunning.
What a game of SKATE is
The format is simple and addictive: a flip decides who starts. The one in front lands a clean trick; the rival has to nail the same. If they can't, they take a letter. First to spell S-K-A-T-E loses.
It was born in the streets and popularized by series like Battle at the Berrics (BATB). No ramp or official contest needed: flat ground, two skaters and the will to go at it.
Rules and strategy
Anything the leader calls and lands counts: flips, grinds, manuals… in switch or nollie to raise the difficulty. The rival gets one attempt per trick to match.
The strategy is picking tricks you own and your rival doesn't, without overreaching: miss your own trick and you lose the turn (and the initiative). It's as much head as feet.
When the crowd decides (best trick and jams)
A game of SKATE referees itself: the letters call the result, no jury. But skate also has formats where the people decide: best-trick battles and jams, where the trick that sparks the most chaos wins.
That's where Roundr comes in: for a best trick or a jam you build the bracket, drop a QR and the crowd votes the best trick live from their phones. The game of SKATE's objective result comes from the letters; the crowd's prize comes from the audience.
Skate vs. freestyle, dance and beatbox
In freestyle the word rules; in dance, the body; in beatbox, the mouth. In skate the feet and the board rule: it's the most physical, street discipline of all.
It shares the duel format with the others —head-to-head, in turns— but is decided differently: by letters in a game of SKATE, and by crowd vote in a best trick.
